Behaviors are a form of expression. A child will try to communicate their emotions through their behaviors. Sometimes these behaviors are negative. How do we begin to handle these negative behaviors? The first thing we just do is look at ourselves. How are we teaching children and are we modeling the right ways to handle their negative emotions? If children are constantly punished for their negative emotions, how can they learn the skills to handle these emotions in a positive way? Children need to learn these skills in order to build upon their emotional development. Children need guidance and support and they need us to be there for them both physically and psychologically. They need to know that we are there to keep them safe no matter what. By supporting them and establishing that they can count on us, we can help to guide their mental well-being towards a more positive state of mind.
